Bio

The Rt Hon Sir David Lidington KCB CBE was the Member of Parliament for Aylesbury from 1992 until 2019. During his political career, Sir David served in a number of front bench roles, both in Opposition and Government, including as the UK’s longest serving Minister for European Affairs, Leader of the House of Commons, Lord Chancellor, Secretary of State for Justice, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office. Sir David has represented the United Kingdom at the EU, NATO, the Council of Europe, OSCE and the UN Security Council and acted as deputy to the Rt Hon Theresa May MP from 2018-19. 

Sir David was educated at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School and Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge where he studied history and completed a PhD on Elizabethan history. Before being elected to Parliament, Sir David worked for BP and Rio Tinto and spent three years as a Special Advisor to Douglas Hurd at the Home Office and Foreign Office. He has twice captained a winning University Challenge team: when Sidney Sussex College won the competition in 1979 and again in a 'champion of champions' contest in 2002 to mark the show's 40th anniversary. Sir David is married to Helen and they have four sons. 

In July 2020, Sir David was elected chair of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) - the world's oldest independent think tank on international defence and security.
