In today's difficult economic and geopolitical conditions, we cannot afford to ignore any opportunities that improve prospects for the UK's people and businesses. As Conservatives we believe a pragmatic approach to enhancing cooperation between the UK and the European Union is required.

CEF welcomes today's announcement as a path towards resetting the UK-EU partnership, but there is still little understanding about what the UK Government wishes to achieve in the broader discussions about the future of our relationship with the EU.

Negotiations between the parties should now be expedited and urgent attention given to more areas where expanded cooperation can bring benefits to both the UK and the EU.
